What to Know Before You Buy

The most important question in water filtration is what you are filtering out, and that answer depends entirely on your water source. City water and well water are completely different problems. City water is treated but carries chlorine, chloramines, and disinfection byproducts. Well water can carry iron, manganese, hardness minerals, bacteria, and nitrates depending on your geology and land use nearby. Before buying any filtration system, run a water test. A basic mail-in test costs $30 to $150 and tells you exactly what you are dealing with.

For city water the most common solution is a whole house carbon filter to remove chlorine and taste issues, sometimes paired with a reverse osmosis system under the sink for drinking water. For well water the path is more complex and usually involves a sediment pre-filter, an iron or sulfur treatment system, a softener if hardness is high, and then final polishing for drinking water. Creators in the well water space show these multi-stage setups in detail because there is no single product that handles everything.

Reverse osmosis systems remove the widest range of contaminants including heavy metals, nitrates, fluoride, and most dissolved solids. The tradeoff is they waste water in the process, typically three to four gallons for every gallon they produce, and they remove beneficial minerals too. Many people add a remineralization filter at the end. Gravity filters like Berkey are popular with off-grid creators because they need no electricity or plumbing but they are slow and have a smaller capacity.

Replacement filter costs are the real long-term expense most buyers underestimate. A whole house system with a $300 upfront cost might need $100 to $200 in replacement cartridges every six to twelve months. The shops here pull from creators who show their actual filter change schedules and real water quality results, not just unboxing videos.
