What to Know Before You Buy

FPV is a build hobby as much as a flying hobby. The community is heavily weighted toward people who assemble their own quads from components rather than buying ready-to-fly products, which means creator content goes deep on frame selection, motor KV ratings, flight controller firmware, and ESC current ratings. If you are new to FPV, starting with a ready-to-fly micro quad like the BetaFPV Cetus or a Tiny Whoop is the standard recommendation before investing in a full freestyle build.

The four components that define a quad build are the frame, flight controller, motors, and video system. Everything else is secondary. Frame size is measured in motor-to-motor diagonal distance: 3 inch for indoor, 5 inch for freestyle outdoor, 7 inch for long range and efficiency. Flight controllers run Betaflight or Ardupilot firmware. Motors are specified by stator size and KV rating where lower KV runs heavier props at lower RPM and higher KV runs lighter props at higher RPM. Analog and digital video systems are incompatible with each other and the goggles you buy must match the system on your quad.

DJI dominates the consumer drone market for good reason. The Mavic and Mini series produce professional quality footage with minimal setup and reliable obstacle avoidance. For creators who need aerial footage without the FPV learning curve, DJI is the practical answer. The FPV community and the DJI community are largely separate audiences with different content and different shops.

Radio controllers are a significant investment that transfers across builds and aircraft. FrSky, RadioMaster, and Jumper make the controllers that dominate creator content because they run OpenTX and EdgeTX firmware, support multiple protocols, and work with nearly any receiver on the market. Buying a quality radio early saves money over time because it does not need replacing when you upgrade your aircraft.
